East Riding of Yorkshire Band Victorious at Pogson Bray Contest 2019

On October 13th the Band travelled to Elland near Halifax to take part in the Pogson-Bray entertainment contest. Our 20 minute set included Blackbird Special complete with choreographed walk-on. Londonderry Air, a Cornet Solo expertly played by James Kerridge. Wellington March, an arrangement of Coldplay’s Yellow and finally finishing with James Curnows Psalm of Praise.

Although not playing an outright solo the adjudicator picked out our Percussionist Tomas Remblence as having made outstanding solo contributions to every piece and awarded him the soloist prize.

The Band were delighted to be announced as the overall winners.

Welcome to Maddy

The band would like to welcome Maddy Bramley to the front bench cornet section. She brings with her a wealth of banding experience and has quickly become part of our band family, in her own words:

I started playing cornet at the age of 12 in Worsbrough Brass band with my dad and brother.  Less than a year after joining, we won the Yorkshire 4th section area, and continued playing with the band for a while.

Seven years ago, I joined Barnsley Brass with my parents and brother, who are still members of the band.

When I moved to Hull for university, I joined Beverley Brass band, then had a North of England 3rd section win with Barton Community band the following year.

Last year when I returned from a year abroad, I joined Barnsley Brass once again to win the Yorkshire 3rd section area and, six months later, we became National 3rd section champions!

I have now moved to Hull permanently, and East Riding of Yorkshire band have been friendly and welcoming, so I’m looking forward to my future here!

East Riding of Yorkshire Band Gains Charity Status

We are delighted to announce that the Band has now gained Charity Status and has been entered onto the Charity Commission’s Register of Charities (Registered Charity Number 1184756).

Click HERE to see the Band on the Charity Commission’s website.

So what will change?  Well, probably not a lot, to start with anyway!

Led by Frank Hoyland, the musical side of what we do will continue unchanged (well, continue to grow in the way it has for the last few years).  On the financial side, the band will now be able to benefit from Gift Aid on certain donations, and will also be able to apply for grants from organisations who only accept applications from Registered Charities. This is likely to make a real difference to our finances, enabling us to buy more music, more instruments, and to be even more active in the community.

The Trustees, led by David Vivian (Chairman), will have overall responsibility for the Band’s activities as a Charity and will meet regularly as its Management Team to ensure we meet our obligations to Band members, to the local community and to the wider public.

Marching Onwards and upwards!

Frank Hoyland announced as new Musical Director

The East Riding of Yorkshire band are delighted to announce the appointment of Frank Hoyland as Musical Director to take the band into the concert and contesting season.

After a few years away from conducting due to the pressures of work, Frank is very much excited and looking forward to working with us and was thrilled to accept the challenge of achieving greater things as Musical Director of the band. An accomplished Euphonium player, Frank has conducted and played with many Championship Section bands including Yorkshire Imperial Metals, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery, and British Steel Stainless Dodworth, performing at the highest level and under many distinguished conductors.

Now in a position to resume a Musical Director role Frank is eager to use all his enormous passion and enthusiasm and pass on the wealth of experience and knowledge of over 40 years of banding for the good of the East Riding of Yorkshire Band.

The band is looking forward to building on its success in the community of Hessle following its move to our own bandroom in 2018, with an exciting programme of Autumn concerts in 2019 in partnership with other musical ensembles.

Departure of Musical Director Garry Hallas – May 2019

The band would like to announce the departure of Musical Director Garry Hallas who has led the band with distinction since 2016, taking over from Ian Scott. We have enjoyed contest success at Pogson Bray in 2017 and a very successful programme of concerts with Garry’s programming and compering skills building a strong audience with sell out concerts at our new bandroom, the Memorial Hall Hessle. Garry has been far more than a musical director and has been an active and supportive member of the management team with fundraising and the move to the new bandroom.
We wish Garry well in his next musical venture and every success in the future.
