New Season, New players!

It sounds like football, but as we head into the winter season programme the Band is delighted to welcome two new players to our team – Elizabeth Hartley (Assistant Principal Cornet) and Daniel Towey (EEb Bass).

Liz has played in bands for 8 years and has been with Dinnington (who featured in the BBC series “A Band for Britain”), Chapeltown and Hatfield before moving to Deepcar as Principal Cornet. The BBC series gave Liz the opportunity to play under the baton of Nick Childs and Sue Perkins and to perform with Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Liz has played in wind bands since she was 7, finally reaching top trumpet for her final 2 years in the top wind band in the Sheffield Music Services. She also plays viola and has achieved Grade 8. Singing is her main instrument at Hull University where she now studies Music and Theatre. Quite an all-rounder!

Dan started out in music with piano lessons at the age of 8, his teacher noticed quite soon that he had perfect pitch. Dan has moved through almost every brass instrument increasing in size before settling on the tuba around aged 12, when he was so small, and the instrument was so big, that he had to sit on a number of yellow pages to reach the level of the mouthpiece for a couple of years! He played in the Worcestershire Youth Brass and Youth Wind Bands on tuba. His other main instrument is the clarinet (grade 7) and alto sax. Dan is now in his final year at university doing Sport Rehabilitation. He is a keen sportsman, especially football, and hopes to work for a Sports Club once graduated.

The Band’s first concert of the new season is on Friday 16th November, 7.30pm at South Cave Church. The concert programme is very varied with something for everyone, marches, music from film and shows, classic brass compositions and solos from James Kerridge, Jim Johnson, Mike Waudby and Mike Hedley. There will also be an opportunity for Remembrance, followed by Patriotic music in a “Last night of the Proms” finale. Come and see the team in action!
